Password Potions: Magic in the Mundane

Something that gets overlooked as a means of manifesting is the simple act of entering a password.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got dozens if not hundreds of digital accounts here, there and everywhere and many passwords to accompany them. It can drive you bananas trying to remember them all, so we often stick to a handful of passwords or perhaps even use e-wallets or the good old pen and paper to keep a record! You might use cookies in your web browser to remember some, but what about those passwords you do have to enter every day? Perhaps you use public computers, or you have to enter passwords at your workplace. Passwords are closely linked in our mind-maps to our own identities. We carefully choose a username to reflect our sense of self and various personas – so what effect does having another phrase so closely linked with that identity? We often place lucky charms or special mementos on our key chains in the meatspace, so passwords should be considered in the same light.

Choosing a password is a bit if a task these days with higher security requirements prompting us to use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols, with both upper AND lower case. But crafting passwords can be a magical act that can contribute to a particular manifestation. Every self-respecting modern magic user should use passwords as miniature spells!

Before you go with your pets name or your favourite food, or even something negative typed out of frustration, consider using words that evoke a positive message or contribute to a greater working. Passwords could potentially have the following uses:

  • Daily positive affirmations. This might seem cheesy or new-age, but hey if you have to type out “IamLovedtoday999″ every day this can send a positive little message to yourself, reminding you that you’re special.
  • A key that feeds a servitor. Consider incorporating a bit of password magic into your next servitor evocation so each time you key in the password you will be ‘feeding’ your obedient little beastie.
  • A password can be generated as part of a sigil working. A key phrase can be encrypted and the entry of the password in each instance, whether it is for a fixed period or indefinitely, can be part of the gnosis or ‘firing off’ process of a particular sigil working.
  • Energy tidbits that contribute to a greater working. If you have been doing any spellwork or greater workings passwords can help feed the spell, and then changed when they are no longer required.
  • A password can be an offering in honour of a particular deity.
  • You could concoct a series of passwords that are linked together for various different accounts – just like ingredients in a potion. When mixed together, or entered at different times, the sum of the parts produce a greater working for something that requires a whole incantation, for example.

There are probably a few more possibilities! When you consider the act of typing a password as an exchange of energy that gets fired off into cyberspace, it almost seems a waste not to do something magical with them.

The other thing to consider is the psychic pollution that comes with having meaningless passwords – especially if you harbour old passwords that still recall the name of an ex-partner or deceased loved one. What are you really calling in next time you type your log in? It’s good to do a digital clean up of one’s various identities from time to time, not just for security’s sake, but perhaps for your own psychic hygiene as well.

There’s so much digital clutter in our lives – let’s be thrifty opportunists and make good use of it!
